Description
Common Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium) is a delicate, aromatic annual herb with fern-like foliage and a mild aniseed flavour. Often described as “gourmet parsley”, it is a staple in French cuisine and forms part of the classic fines herbs blend. Growing to about 40-60 cm in height, Chervil thrives in cooler, partially shaded areas, making it ideal for early spring or autumn sowing in South African gardens.
It produces tiny white flowers if left to bolt, and while its flavour is best before flowering, these blooms are also beneficial for beneficial insects. A great choice for shaded garden spots, Chervil also makes a lovely addition to herb pots and borders.

How To Use
Common Chervil flourishes under the following conditions:
- Season: Spring/Summer
- Temperature: 18-24°C
- Germinate: 14-21 days
- Depth: 3 mm
- Spacing: 30x20 cm
- Harvest: 70-75 days
- Height: 40-60 cm
- Flowering Season: Late spring if allowed to bolt
- Exposure: Partial shade preferred; tolerates dappled light
Ideal Growing Environment
- Prefers a well drained substrate with amendments or pre-made soil containing all the necessary base additives; pH 6.0–7.0.
-
Regular, light watering – soil should stay slightly moist but not soggy.
-
Minimal feeding required. Apply compost or slow-release organic fertiliser annually in spring.
- Performs best in low to moderate humidity (40–60%). Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
- Generally low in pest pressure; occasional aphids or snails may appear in dense plantings.
- Ideal for shade gardens, herb beds, underplanting, or containers on east-facing patios.
- Benefits from being planted alongside radishes, cabbage, carrots, and chives.
- Intercropping: Pair with tomatoes, capsicums, broccoli, or strawberries to deter pests.
- Crop Rotation: Use as companions or rotate after heavy feeders. Perennials (rosemary, thyme, lavender) stay in place longer.
- Soil Rejuvenation: Enhance soil microbes; use as borders between cycles.
- Avoid planting with coriander or fennel, which may compete due to similar growth habits.
