- Regular, even moisture is essential – avoid letting the soil dry out.
- Use low-nitrogen organic fertiliser to encourage stem growth over leafiness.
- Cool to mild temperatures, 10-24°C; tolerates light frost and some heat.
- Performs best in moderate humidity (50–70%) with good air circulation to prevent rot.
- Performs well in most regions of South Africa, particularly in mild winters and temperate zones like the Highveld, Eastern Cape, and coastal KwaZulu-Natal.
- Benefits from being planted alongside carrots, beets, lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries, broccoli, cabbage and kale.
