Description
Tomato Moneymaker (Solanum lycopersicum) is a classic, indeterminate heirloom variety prized for its reliability, heavy yields, and balanced flavour profile. Producing an abundance of medium-sized, round red fruits, it performs exceptionally well in warmer regions of South Africa, especially during the spring and summer growing seasons.
This variety grows tall and benefits from staking or caging, reaching up to 2 metres in height, and is well-suited to open-field cultivation, greenhouses, or larger containers. The fruit has a smooth skin, firm texture, and a mildly sweet taste, making it ideal for salads, sandwiches, and cooking.
Moneymaker is known for its vigorous growth, disease tolerance, and ability to thrive even in challenging soils, making it a favourite among home gardeners and market growers alike.

Deep, consistent watering. Keep foliage dry to prevent blight or mildew. Mulch to conserve soil moisture.
-
Use a balanced organic fertiliser at planting and switch to a high-potassium and phosporus feed during flowering.
-
Moderate humidity (50–70%) is ideal; ensure good air circulation to reduce disease pressure.
- Moderate (50–70%); ensure good ventilation to prevent blight or fungal disease.
- Requires strong staking or caging due to vigorous growth and heavy fruiting.
- Tomatoes and cannabis requirements are very similar.
- Benefits from being planted alongside basil, marigolds, nasturtiums, garlic, chives, onions, carrots, and lettuce.
- Intercropping: Pair with basil, marigolds, or clover for pest control and soil health.
- Crop Rotation: Follow with peas, clover, or lettuce. Avoid same family (nightshades or brassicas) in the same bed for 3 years.
